Facebook releases a new android app called Facebook Lite for low end android devices. Facebook lite is a lighter version of official Facebook android app which uses less data and specially designed for 2G networks and areas with limited network connectivity. The size of app is just 252KB which is comparatively very low than the main Facebook for Android app which weighs over 27MB.
Facebook lite is currently available only in developing countries such as Bangladesh, Nepal, Nigeria, South Africa, Sudan, Sri Lanka, Vietnam and Zimbabwe. There is no information from Facebook, when the Facebook Lite will be available in India.
I have tried the app on Samsung Galaxy S2 and found it to be working smoothly on 2G connection without any issue. Below are the screenshots of the Facebook Lite app from the device I have tested.
Facebook lite comes with all basic Facebook functionality along with push notifications and camera integration. Lite is based on Snaptu, an app that Facebook acquired in 2011 for $70 million.
