New tool to detect malware:

  • Georgia Institute of Technology published an article in which they mentioned that a new tool “Detector of Victim-specific Accessibility”(DVa) has been developed by the Researchers of Georgia Tech to check for malware.
  • New tool ‘DVa’ runs on the cloud to check the phone for this malware, and then send report to users showing which apps are malware and how to delete them. It also sends report to Google so that the concerned company can eradicate the malware from apps.

Brendan Saltaformaggio, an associate professor in the School of Cybersecurity and Privacy (SCP) and the School of Electrical and Computer Engineering said that-

“”As we continue to design systems that are more and more accessible, we also need security experts in the room, Because if we don’t, they’re going to get abused by hackers.”

Modeling of malware:

  • A malware analysis has been performed on set up of five Google Pixel phones by the Researchers to determine the vulnerability of phones due to this type of hack.
  • The Researchers teamed up with an industry which leads in cloud, data, and network security named “Netskope”, to protect smartphones from this type of vulnerable malware. Then, some sample malware installed on each phone by them to check how it affects the device and DVa is used to report this behavior.
  • They found that new tool ‘DVa’ detect current attacks, but the challenge for researchers is to ensure that removing malware doesn’t remove accessibility.

Let’s see how the new tool and the accessibility services work in future and detect Malware on Android phones. It will really be appreciable to have tool like this which can detect malware and make users alert to malware affected app from their device.
