Android 16 codename is “baklava”, as suggested by evidence. As everybody is waiting for the public launch of Android 15, Google started working on the next version i.e, Android 16.

Android16 codename is baklava

Android 16 new codename would be ‘baklava’ :

Android 15  was codenamed “vanilla ice-cream” or ‘VIC’ and now rumor suggests that Android 16 will be codenamed “baklava”, according to Android Authority. “baklava” means ‘flaky pastry‘ associated with Armenian, Greek, Iranian, Turkish, and other cuisines.

As it is still being referred as “Android W” by Googlers in various places, while “baklava” is expected to be reflected in next year status.

For new version of Android, an alphabet reset was always inevitable. Rather choosing the alphabets like- W, X, Y, Z, Google has adopted letter ‘B’ which could be directly related that how the build ID starting with Android 14 QPR2 has been changed by Google:

  • The last build of QPR1 in May was UD2A.240505.001
  • The next build of QPR2 in June was AP2A.240605.024

That ‘U’ means Upside Down Cake, but more unified development method has been adopted by Google for Android that has switched the first letter to ‘A’ and hence in year 2025 letter’B’ build will be started. Well, Google has not officially announced about the codename, users need to wait for official details about it.

Android 16 release is expected in Q2 of 2025:

If anyone looks at the history of Android version releases, it is found that the schedule of these major releases mainly take place in Q3 or Q4 of a given year. But this time, Android’s release cycle would be significantly moved up by Google, as some leaked evidence suggest that Android 16 could be launched in “Q2 of 2025”.

Earlier this year, for improving platform stability, a ‘trunk-based development model’ has been accepted by Google for Android.

Google’s ‘trunk stable project’ is basically for Android developers who work on a single, unified internal “main” branch and use flagging to determine which APIs and features get enabled in a particular build. This also helps Google to enable new changes in less time as compared to the earlier one. Google is so much confident in this new. development process which led the early release of new Android version than usual.

Hence, this is the reason how we can see the early release of Android 16 with new codename- “baklava”.
