ChatGPT Search, an evolution of the SearchGPT prototype and the Google challenger is launched by OpenAI on October 31, 2024.
What is OpenAI’s ChatGPT Search and how it works?
ChatGPT Search launched by OpenAI is built into ChatGPT platform which is designed in a way to give “timely answers” to questions by drawing from a range of online sources.
ChatGPT Search is powered by a fine-tuned version of OpenAI’s GPT-4o model which helps users by serving up information and photos from the web — like sports scores, news, stock quotes, etc, along with links to relevant source.
It will choose to search the web based on the queries asked by users, or users can manually choose to search by just clicking the new web search icon.
The search result which will be shown by ChatGPT might be a summary source pulled up from local news website along with follow-up question which includes suggestions by showing a list of local options.
Also, it is said by OpenAI that Election results-related queries will be directed to sources like AP and Reuters.
“Browser extension” has been released by OpenAI to make ChatGPT Search the default search engine in Chrome.
Soon, ChatGPT Search will be brought to OpenAI’s “Advanced voice mode feature”, and for “deeper research”, OpenAI will leverage its o1 ‘reasoning model’.
Firstly, ChatGPT Search access will be given to ChatGPT Plus and Team users on mobile and the web to start, then after in coming weeks OpenAI’s enterprise and educational customers will get ChatGPT Search along with free users.
Concern regarding ChatGPT Search:
One study has shown that 25% of publisher traffic would be negatively affected by the AI overview due to the de-emphasis on article links.
It has been protested by some of the publishers against AI-generated overviews that it threaten to cannibalize traffic to the sites from which they source their information.
Well, it has been said by OpenAI that it incorporated feedback from publisher partners about how ChatGPT Search decides which articles are most relevant to a query, also the summary length and quotations for articles will be determined.
